How Practical Experience Propelled Maddie’s Legal Career Forward
Maddie joined the Beck Legal team as part of a Latrobe University Bendigo Clinical Placement in 2022 and continued to work in our Litigation and Local Government team on a part-time basis while completing her degree before being admitted as a lawyer in 2024.
Maddie is an advocate of gaining practical experience in a law firm whilst studying and believes her time at Beck Legal as a student has put her on the front foot in starting her career. When we asked Maddie to put those benefits into words she said:
- It is a supportive and positive environment where teamwork is a priority. Everyone isn’t trying to compete; we all help each other and want us all to succeed.
- Working whilst studying has challenged me not just academically but has allowed me to develop and grow as a person and given me confidence in my own ability.
- Getting the practical experience as well as the theory has made me question and explore files on a deeper level, to understand the process rather than just read it. I get to network with lawyers, interact with clients and I have someone to go to with questions around what I am studying as well as my files.
- Studying and working part time at Beck legal has allowed me to get a foot in the door and an advantage over others who are looking for job opportunities along with everyone else that finishes university at the same time, especially in regional Victoria.

Structure of the clerkship
Upon interviewing for the clerkship at Beck Legal I was offered the option of undertaking three weeks in one department or a rotation with one week in three different departments. I chose the latter option as I wanted to try different departments to see what I would enjoy. I spent one week each in the Commercial team, the Litigation & Local Government team and lastly the Property & Development team.
I was partnered with a Solicitor in each team and basically replicated their day. If they had client meetings or court I would attend with them.
What I learnt
Over the three weeks I learnt a really wide range of things. I learnt to draft documents and agreements, analyse and document evidence, lodge property documents online and much more. In each department I learnt about all different matters, no two days were the same. I learnt about the systems and software the firm uses and became comfortable looking up and researching current files the solicitors were working on.
Not only did I learn about substantial content and work the Solicitors do, but also the general running of a law firm including open and closing files, billing, precedents and client management. I now have a much clearer idea of what it is actually like to work as a solicitor and what each department does.
Overall experience
My overall experience at Beck Legal was really positive and enjoyable. I thoroughly enjoyed learning every day and experiencing what it’s like to work in a law firm. All of the staff are super friendly and helpful, and really included me in the team. I received great feedback from my supervisors, so I really feel like I contributed in a meaningful way.
I went into this experience with a clear idea of what area of law I wanted to work in, however after this clerkship I have a completely different idea. I really enjoyed my week in litigation and think I’ll most likely pursue this avenue. I enjoyed how diverse the work is and how the team collaborates with all of the other teams in the firm on their matters. This clerkship has been very beneficial for my development, and I would highly recommend it to anyone studying law.
