International Women’s Day is often a moment of reflection but for me, this year’s theme, Give to Gain, feels deeply personal.
For almost 17 years, I’ve had the privilege of growing my career at Beck Legal. Like any long journey, it has come with its share of challenges, moments of doubt, and lessons learned the hard way. But far more than that, it has given me opportunities, growth, incredible relationships, and the deep satisfaction of contributing to the business we are today. I am incredibly proud of what we have built here at Beck Legal and deeply grateful for the trust, belief, and support I’ve received along the way from both Directors and fellow employees.
As I reflect on what has driven me on my career pathway, I keep coming back to the same thoughts… I have always wanted to help others and have a sense of purpose in my role.
Coaching, mentoring and guiding have become a core part of my day-to-day. Supporting people through their career progression, building self-confidence, deepening self-awareness, and helping them become the best version of themselves in their own way is something I feel passionate about. Why?
Because growth doesn’t look the same for everyone and I want to offer the kind of support, encouragement, and understanding that I needed (and sometimes still need) along the way.
Some people need encouragement. Some need a challenge. Some need reassurance, structure, perspective, or simply someone who listens. When we tailor our support to the individual, that’s where personal and professional development happens. And in giving that support, I’ve gained far more than I ever expected… perspective, humility, gratitude, and fulfilment (plus a few sleepless nights and grey hairs).
My belief in lifting others up was shaped long before my professional career began. I grew up surrounded by women I saw as strong female figures, starting with my nan, who raised nine children, seven of them daughters. Her resilience through adversity, her inner strength, and unwavering commitment to her family were foundations that still guide me today.
From my first job in a fashion clothing store to greeting customers in the local newsagency, during my early career I was surrounded by women who supported, encouraged, and believed in me. They lifted me up, sometimes without even realising it and those early experiences shaped the leader I strive to be today.
While this message is my experience as a woman, it is broader than gender alone. I grew up on a farm, surrounded by boys, and I can absolutely rock it with the boys too! For me, our sex doesn’t define us, our character does. What matters is integrity. Empathy. Work ethic. Courage. Kindness. Accountability.
To me Give to Gain captures exactly that. It’s about showing up for others. About leadership through service. About creating environments where people feel safe to grow, try, fail, learn, and succeed. If I can help someone build confidence, find clarity, or take a step they once doubted they could, then I gain purpose, meaning, and connection.
This International Women’s Day, I’m proud to stand for coaching, mentoring, growth, and lifting others up, regardless of title, gender, or background. Because when we give with intention, we all gain.
