The recent “May Means Business” Secondary Dwelling, Infill Housing & Investment Pathways event held at our Tourism and Cultural Visitor Experience Centre highlighted the growing community interest in infill dwellings and the important role they can play in addressing housing needs across regional Victoria.

We are very fortunate to have a conference space such as the new Tourism and Cultural Visitor Experience Centre conference room. The session attracted an impressive turnout, uniting local builders, property professionals, those in the construction and technical services industry and members of the general public together to learn more about the opportunities and challenges surrounding infill development.

The strong attendance reflected not only the relevance of the topic, but also the willingness of the local community to be involved in shaping the future of housing in our region.
Discussions covered a range of important topics, including defining secondary dwellings, when permits are required, leading to broader conversation surrounding the role of town planners in the development and construction journey and clarifying the recent changes to local planning policies, procedures and approvals.

A key strength of the event was the depth of knowledge shared by the presenters and participants. Speakers included both local experts and guest representatives from other Victorian councils and organisations, providing a valuable mix of regional experience and broader planning perspectives. Their practical insights helped illustrate what can often be seen as a complex area of development and town planning. Beneficial to listeners, the presenters didn’t fear to address the challenges posed by recent changes to town policy and presented various outcome-based solutions.

Importantly, the event encouraged open discussion about how communities can balance growth with neighbourhood character and liveability. It also reinforced the value of collaboration between councils, industry professionals and residents when considering future housing solutions. Attendees were able to gain a clearer understanding of how infill dwellings can create additional housing options while making better use of existing land and infrastructure.

Events such as this demonstrate the benefit of informed community conversations and highlight the proactive approach being taken in Swan Hill to explore practical, local responses to changing housing needs.
Overall, the May Means business initiative has been a fantastic opportunity for our community to learn, connect and be a part of the future of our town’s growth. Congratulations to all involved.
