As part of the Victorian Housing Statement, on Friday 25th of October 2024 the Victorian Government announced the target numbers for new social and affordable housing in Victoria’s regional areas and the changes being made to assist with meeting these numbers.
Here are the current regional housing numbers that you should know about:
The first 1,000 new social and affordable homes are intended to go to the following regions:
- 68 homes in Mallee
- 98 homes in Wimmera South-West
- 162 homes in Loddon
- 34 homes in Central Highlands
- 238 homes in Barwon
- 140 homes in Goulburn
- 110 homes in Ovens Murray
- 65 homes in Outer Gippsland
- 110 homes in Inner Gippsland
- 70 dwellings are being delivered to support flood-affected areas in Shepparton, Seymour and Rochester.
- 50 social and affordable homes are in delivery in Colac, plus 50 in Wodonga.
To deliver these homes in regional Victoria and more, the Victorian Government are implementing the following:
- Investment into a pipeline of regional planners which includes:
- contributing $500,000.00 towards a Regional Planner Cadetship Program to encourage new planners to enter rural and regional local governments to address the statewide shortage of planners in rural and regional areas; and
- a Regional Planning Hubs program which places more planning experts in rural and regional councils,
Both of these programs and additional changes made by the Victorian Government aim to make planning processes faster in rural and regional Victoria.
- Reforms to the developer contributions system that will generate funding for roads, paths, public transport, schools, health and community facilities, parks, sporting fields and open spaces in these very communities.
- Changes to stamp duty concessions making purchasing off-the-plan units and townhouses more affordable in regional Victoria.
- Creating a new building watchdog to give purchasers more peace of mind when purchasing and building in regional Victoria.
